What is Gur?
Gur, also known as jaggery, is an unrefined form of sugar that has been extracted from the juice of sugarcane the sap of palm, or the sap of coconut.
It is dark brown in color, and is often available as a solid block, similar to this on Amazon.
Gur is used in a lot of Pakistani and Indian sweets and snacks. It has a richer, more caramel-like, similar to brown sugar.
When it is heated, it melts into a liquid form, similar to caramel, which makes it perfect for today’s recipe!
Tips to make Gur/Jaggery Popcorn
- This recipe works best with unsalted, air-popped or stove-top popcorn.
- The jaggery will cool and harden quite fast, so work quickly once the jaggery is ready.
- Let the popcorn cool on a baking sheet or large plate on a single layer. This allows the popcorn to stay separated rather than form a large ball of popcorn.
How to store Gur/Jaggery Popcorn?
This popcorn will keep at room temperature for about a week to 10 days!
Store in an airtight container to maintain its freshness.
This popcorn treat is also a perfect gift. We made holiday treat boxes for our friends and family, and this gur popcorn was a sweet and crunchy addition!
