Boondi Raita: Spiced Yogurt Side with Chickpea Pearls

This creamy boondi raita is a simple snack or side dish, that is cool and refreshing for the summer!

Yogurt is an ingredient we love to use in South Asian cuisine.

It is no surprise we use it so often because it is a great way to offset all the masala (spices) in our foods. As a result, we of course have lots of condiments and side dishes made with yogurt.

This boondi raita is a special raita that is a perfect example of a condiment we love to pair with simple foods! The yogurt is cooling and the boondi adds texture to the dish!

We love this boondi raita with simple dishes like vegetable pulao or this keema masoor pulao.

Boondi Raita Ingredients

  • Yogurt (Dahi) – This is the base of this recipe. Full fat yogurt or Dahi is best for this recipe.
  • Boondi – these deep-fried pearls are made with gram flour or chickpea flour. They are easily found at many South Asian grocery stores, or you can make them at home if you prefer.
  • Cumin, Red chili powder – These are commonly used spiced, and you can adjust them to your taste.
  • Chaat Masala – Chaat masala is a special spice blend often used in many Chaat (appetizer) dishes.

How to serve Boondi Raita?

This boondi raita is a versatile dish. Boondi Raita is perfect as a snack. It is often served at Iftar during Ramadan.

It is also a perfect accompaniment to simple meals, especially pulao or rice dishes. Here are some of our favorites:

  • Keema Masoor Pulao: One-Pot Pilaf with Lentils and Ground Beef
  • Beef Pilau (Pulao)
  • Vegetable Pulao: Pakistani Vegetable Rice Recipe

Tips for Boondi Raita

  • This Boondi Raita is a great side dish for a simple meal, or even as a snack any time of day.
  • Boondi Raita can be made ahead of time. You need at least 15-20 minutes for the boondi to soak up the yogurt.
  • Store boondi raita in an airtight container for 2-3 days.
