Ingredients & Notes
- Puff pastry sheets – we use storebought puff pastry sheets. We recommend cutting each sheet in half before using for this recipe.
- Minced meat/Ground Beef / Keema – lean or medium ground beef is great for this recipe. You want the beef to have flavor, but not be too oily or too much moisture in the filling.
- Milk – any time of milk will work for this recipe, it helps keeps the filling moist, and adds a little richness.
- Plain bread crumbs
- Ground Spices – roasted cumin powder, red chilli powder, white pepper, garlic powder, black pepper – these spices are the perfect complements to flavor the ground beef filling to add a touch of spice.
- Dried oregano – added to the top of the puff pastry for garnish
- Egg yolk – a little egg yolk brushed on top of the puff pastry gives these beef sausage rolls a golden color. Alternatively, you can use a whole egg or just egg white as well.
How to make easy beef sausage rolls?
Prepare the ground beef filling
In a pot over medium heat, add ground beef and cook till brown and separated.
Add milk and mix well. Next, add bread crumbs, salt, and the spices (except oregano) – black pepper powder, white pepper powder, red chili powder, garlic powder, and cumin powder.
Mix well until incorporated, then turn off the heat. Let the mixture cool to room temperature.
Make the beef sausage rolls
Preheat the oven to 400ºF.
Roll out the puff pastry sheet and cut the sheets in half. Each half-sheet makes about 8-10 pieces
Add the cooled ground beef mixture to the middle of the puff pastry.
Brush the sides with water. Then bring the two edges to the middle to seal the puff pastry. It should look like a log at this time.
Mix the egg yolk and brush it to the top of the log. Sprinkle with dried oregano.
Slice the log into 8-10 pieces, depending on the size you want. Transfer to a baking sheet.
Bake in the preheated oven at 400ºF for 7-10 minutes, then reduce temperature to 350ºF and cook for another 5-7 minutes till golden.
Recipe Tips
- Puff pastry is easiest to work with when it is kept cold. If making multiple batches, make sure to keep the puff pastry in the fridge.
- The filling for these sausage rolls is flexible, you can adjust the spices to your preferences.
- These beef sausage rolls or meat pies are best enjoyed fresh out of the oven so the puff pastry stays crisp.
- Make ahead tip: The beef filling can be made 2-3 days ahead of time and stored in the fridge.
- If you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container. To reheat, bake them in the oven at 350ºF for 5 minutes.
