Chaat is its own food group, in our opinion.
It can be a snack, an appetizer or even a meal in its own right. Chaat refers to a family of savory street foods that uniquely combine flavors and textures.
What makes chaat so unique is the explosion of flavors that comes with it.
Chaat dishes are big on flavor – they’re spicy, sweet and tangy all at the same time. The combination of flavors hits you all at once, making it addictive!
This dahi papdi chaat is a classic chaat dish.

Dahi Papdi Chaat Ingredients
- Papdi – we typically use store-bought papdi which can be found at most South Asian grocery stores.
- Chickpeas – you can boil the chickpeas beforehand or use canned chickpeas for convenience.
- Potato – boil, peel and dice the potato before using. One medium potato per serving is ideal.
- Yogurt – Full-fat yogurt or Dahi is great for this recipe, but you can use your favorite type of yogurt.
- Khajur Imli (Date and tamarind) chutney – we usually make a large batch of this chutney, but you can use a store-bought version for convenience.
- Chaat Masala – Chaat masala is a special spice blend used in many Chaat or street food dishes. It is tangy, a little spicy, and super addictive. You can make your own or use a store-bought version!
- Spices – Red chilli powder, Roasted cumin powder
- Onion and Cilantro – these add some crunch and freshness to this chaat dish.

Recipe Tips
- Dahi Papdi Chaat tastes best fresh. Prepare the ingredients and toppings and assemble them immediately before you are ready to serve.
- You can find the papdi for papdi chaat at most South Asian grocery stores.
- We recommend using full-fat yogurt or dahi. Or mix regular yogurt with some greek yogurt to thicken it. You want your yogurt to be slightly thick rather than runny.
- Typically we like khajur imli chutney on our papdi chaat, but you can also add this green imli chutney instead for a slightly different flavor.
- If hosting a group, you can set out all the toppings and have guests assemble their own plates!
