This masala french toast is a quick and delicious savory french toast. Thick slices of bread are drenched into a savory and spicy egg and milk mixture, then fried to golden perfection!
Weekend breakfasts in our household have always allowed us to slow down and have the first meal of the day together.
Usually, it’s the omelets or eggs made in different ways to everyone’s individual taste. Sometimes it’s other dishes like dal puri, but those must be planned!
This savory take on French toast is a nice departure from the typical savory egg dishes and an easy way to get everyone to agree to eat the same thing. Trust us, no one turns down this french toast!
It is definitely a lovely change of pace – a perfect start to a morning! It is best served when rolling out of bed mid-morning, and really enjoy that cup of tea or coffee.
How to make Masala French Toast?
This Masala French Toast is similar to making a traditional sweet french toast.
#1: Milk and Egg Dipping Mixture
In a shallow bowl, whisk together the milk, egg, ground spices, green chili, and cilantro.
The recipe has our recommended combination of spices. Feel free to experiment with your favorites or what you have on hand!
#2: Prepare the bread
Cut each slice of bread into 2 triangles. This is purely a preference. you can leave the slice whole, or cut of the crust if you choose.
Pre-heat a non-stick or cast iron pan on medium heat.
We love using our Lodge cast iron pan for this as it ensures that the bread cooks evenly!
#3: Make the french toast
Add both butter and oil to generously coat the pan.
Working in batches, dip a slice of bread into the egg and milk mixture, then transfer to the heated pan.
Cook each side for a couple of minutes until golden brown.
Recipe Tips
- Using bread that is just a little stale work great for this recipe, as it soaks up the milk and egg mixture so much better!
- We recommend using thick cut sliced bread for this recipe for the best taste
- Chop the green chili and cilantro as fine as possible, so that it sticks to the bread when dipping it in the mixture.
- We love using a mixture of butter and oil to fry the dipped bread. Butter adds the right amount of richness, and the oil helps the bread not burn too quickly on a hot pan.
